1. They tend to be poorly written, with no proofreading or editing.
2. Book stores require media kits, which include information on your marketing plans, promotions, etc. Most self-publishing authors don't have any money to place ads, send out review copies, or do any real marketing. And if you can't show a bookstore you have a plan to market the book, they will not stock it.
3. Most self-published titles today are handled with print-on-demand outfits. POD titles are generally non-returnable. Book stores usually will not stock non-returnable books.
4. Bookstores generally demand discounts of 45-50% off the retail price. Self-published books generally only have a margin of 20-30%, so you can't offer them the discounts they expect.
If you are serious about publishing, you either need to spend a lot of time and money researching the industry and educating yourself on business and publishing, or seek out a traditional publisher. Self-publishing is NOT a shortcut.|||She's right. Go into a bookstore and ask them to point out any books that are self-published and they will promptly tell you that they don't carry them.

How do I get an ISBN number for my book?
If you want an ISBN for your book, you will need to go to a publisher who will contact an ISBN agency to get the number assigned to your book, and there is a cost to have an ISBN number identified with it. You should consult a publishing company if you need an ISBN.|||it'll be on the back of the book with the bar code.|||The ISBN Agency assigns ISBNs at the direct request of publishers, e-book publishers, audio cassette and video producers, software producers and museums and associations with publishing programs.
If you are publishing your book with any of these entities, they will know what to do.

Is there a way to figure out a book's ISBN online without buying it?
amazon.com gives you that infomation right next to how many pages and all that. you don't have to buy the book.
Where can I buy the Holt Physics California textbook 2007 ISBN 0-03-092210-0 teachers manual?
I am a tutor and I would like to be able to have a teachers manual to teach my students|||try amazon.com|||You are incorrect. If you put in the ISBN number in the amazon.com site, you won't get the Teacher's Manual or the solution manual. All the other answers are correct and you just want to believe what you want. A teacher's manual won't help you as a reference guide.
|||You don't need a teacher's manual to teach the students. You need to know physics. The teacher's manual is not going to teach a teacher physics if they don't know it already.
The teacher's manual doesn't even have a solutions manual, so if you don't know how to do the problems or know the concepts, you are out of luck. Probably not a good idea to teach something you don't know about either.
All the material is in the book, all the teacher's manual does is suggest examples and give notes to why the author does things a certain way instead of another.
For example, when teaching basic kinematics, equations of motions, some professors choose the ground to be 0 and going up is positive. Some choose the peak height to be zero and go down negatively. You get the same answers, but the method is different.|||You cannot. Holt only sells to schools. I cannot either and Im a 16 year teacher, Id have to get the school to order it for me.
Your other questions suggest that you are the high school student in the class. do your own work.|||Teachers manuals aren't sold, they are given free by the publisher to the instructors directly as a token for selecting the textbook to be required by their students. Hence, while you might be able to find an old version of a teacher's edition on a used book site, that wont hold true for a recent version unless it's been stolen.

When a new publisher prints an out of print book does the new publisher need new ISBN numbers?
Yes The digits after the country/language designation indicate the publisher
5.1. General
A separate ISBN must be assigned to every title, or edition of a title by each publisher, but NOT to an unchanged impression or unchanged reprint of the same title in the same format by the same publisher. Revised editions require a new ISBN. A price change does not call for a new ISBN. Changes of the format induce a new ISBN. The same title being published in a series and individually is treated as two different editions.

If ISBN# match does it mean it's the exact book I'm looking for?
I saw this book on amazon, and its a book I've been looking for. Under description the number of pages differs from my previous copy. But the 13 digit ISBN is the same as my previous copy. I want to know, is the book on amazon still the book I'm looking for (which I want to be the same as my previous copy)?
Thanks in advance.|||I am under the impression that if the content changes (such as number of pages) a new ISBN should be acquired.
A book CAN use the same ISBN through multiple printings if the interior content, format, etc. all stay the same, but not if the content has undergone revisions as a new edition usually does.
In this case, if the 13 digit ISBN matches but the page counts don't, Amazon probably has the page count wrong. They have the wrong page counts on our books all the time (though it's not always their fault-- sometimes it's the publisher's!).
It's almost surely the same book.|||Every single book that is published has its own ISBN number. So, the answer to your question is yes, they are the same book. Maybe the number of pages that is written in the description is just an error. Also, for your information, the term ISBN number is redundant because ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. But it is a very common mistake.
