Can a college put a different ISBN than the one that they said you need?

I take online classes and they tell you the books you need. They have the books you need and all you have to do is select them and you can buy them from the school. Of course I wanted to buy them used to save money but none of the ISBNs showed up anywhere on any website. I got the books from the school and the ISBNs were not even close to what they had said I needed. It sounds like a scam and it is wrong.|||It doesn't sound like a scam; it sounds like a mistake! There is a huge difference!

Okay, let me explain ISBN numbers. The initials stand for International Standard Book Number, and they are assigned by the Bureau of Standardization, not the school. They are long, complicated numbers, so it is very easy for someone keying in a number to get it wrong. Rather than looking at just the ISBN #, look at the publisher, edition, year of publication. If those are correct, then the number was just a mistake.
