What does "ISBN" mean when buying a book?

I am required to purchase a book with ISBN: 9781111623098 but is too expensive and I found same book on ebay for less but has different ISBN #... Is it the same?? HELP|||ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number", a unique identifier for books, intended to be used commercially. It was created in the UK in 1966 by the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith and originally called Standard Book Numbering or SBN. In 1970 it was adopted as international standard ISO 2108.|||Go here:

www.fetchbook.info

It's the only book site that actually allows you to enter the ISBN number to find a specific edition of a book, and it will give you gobs of places to buy it at lots of prices. Much better than eBay since it's not an auction site but just a referral site. I've used it for years.|||The ISBN number is the unique number for a book it is like your social security number. The book you are looking at may be a different edition or published in a different format. It can be the same book as the one they recommended for you.|||It's probably a different edition, or has some editing done to it. And yes, it's the same book if that's what you mean.
