Why do some books have two isbn numbers?

Different editions....you have to be careful if you are looking at textbooks...each new edition will have a new number...|||we are running out of isbns, the longer one is the new format, the shorter one is the old format...soon the newer books will only have the new format|||Thee are different formats or editions for the same book,/
