How does a private person go about getting an ISBN number?

I'm publishing a book and I need information about getting an ISBN number for my material.|||Who is eligible for an ISBN?

"The ISBN Agency assigns ISBNs at the direct request of publishers, e-book publishers, audio cassette and video producers, software producers and museums and associations with publishing programs."

Contact author Patty Reilly Panara as she has recently done this.

You can contact her via her web blog (link below). She is extremely nice and has published her own books and purchased ISBN numbers...you can tell her that "Lance" from Timon refered you...she'll know it's me|||i'm sure there is a website where you can purchase one; check out a book on how-to publish a book at the library, or buy one, and they should tell you. also a lot of self-publishing companies will provide that as part of the service.|||You cannot. In America, only a publisher may purchase ISBN numbers - in multiples of 10 plus a fee to register as a publisher. To get one on your own you would have to register in your state as a publisher which makes you liable for sales taxes, corporate taxes and whatever else a business must pay for their employees (you) etc. Plus you would have to buy ten of them. See why self publishing is a really really bad idea?? That's just one reason of many. You also have to pay for editing, galleys, copyrights and the self publisher does NO advertising for you, and you will find no authors willing to read and blurb your books for you. Self publishing sucks. It is a scam. Pax - C.
