Is there a reason why Borders is crossing out ISBN numbers at liquidating stores?

Borders is in Bankruptcy, and their stores are liquidating. If you buy a book at the store, they cross out the ISBN number on the book. Anyone know why?|||That's standard practice for remaindered or marked down books. It's so you can't return them and get full price credit.
